Katchi Kapshida, Comrades: Donetsk Leader Reacts to North Korea’s Support
Unsurprisingly, Russian media played up North Korea’s statement of support for Moscow’s annexation of Ukrainian territory, while downplaying South Korea’s condemnatory statements. Affirmation from Pyongyang may not be the gold standard for the average Russian, yet it certainly does not go unnoticed by political leaders in Russia-claimed territory. Far from being simply warm words from a fellow international pariah, the leader of the former self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic sees it as heralding a step toward a revised global order, as the following translation demonstrates.
Pushilin expresses appreciation for the DPRK’s recognition[1]
The DPRK’s support for the referenda that took place in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regarding their accession to Russia is testimony to the formation of a multipolar world free of hegemony, said the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin.
“It is precisely such a respectful position toward the expression of the people’s will, good, sincere support and mutually-beneficial cooperation that are forming a new world today without hegemony”, Pushilin told RIA Novosti.
Pushilin stated that Donetsk is grateful to North Korea, which first recognized the Donetsk People’s Republic as a state, and has now welcomed its accession into Russia’s fold.
“Today, historic justice has triumphed – Donbas has returned home – and the DPRK was one of the first to affirm our people’s choice, noting that the referendum took place fully in line with the UN charter” Pushilin said.
